SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, which had successfully completed 300 consecutive launches, has experienced an unusual launch failure due to a problem with its second stage engine.
According to foreign media outlets such as Bloomberg on the 12th (local time), the Falcon 9 rocket was launched at 7:35 pm on the 11th from the Vandenberg Space Force Air Station in Santa Barbara, California, carrying 20 satellites for the Starlink network, but failed to enter the expected orbit due to a problem with the second-stage rocket engine.
“While the first stage burn completed normally, the second stage engine leaked liquid oxygen,” SpaceX explained on its website. “Because of this, we were unable to perform a short engine burn necessary to correct the orbit of the Starlink internet satellites.”
The Falcon 9 is a reusable launch vehicle developed by SpaceX that is used to place satellites into orbit for Starlink, a low-Earth orbit communications network.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has grounded the Falcon 9. The flight will be suspended until the root cause is identified and corrective action is taken. There is also analysis that this failure could delay future missions to put astronauts into orbit using the Falcon 9.
The Falcon 9 rocket exploded in June 2015 while carrying NASA cargo to the International Space Station (ISS), and the following year during a fueling experiment on the launch pad. Since then, however, it has successfully launched more than 300 times, with some problems during the landing process.
