The collision occurred at approximately 8,700 kilometres per hour, carrying the physical force of roughly three tonnes of TNT.

The rocket body originated from a high-energy lunar mission launched on January 15, 2025, from the Kennedy Space Center. That flight successfully deployed Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost 1 lunar lander to the Moon under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative, alongside Japan-based ispace’s Resilience lander. Because the mission demanded substantial thrust to reach its destination, the rocket’s upper stage remained stranded in an elongated orbit rather than executing a controlled de-orbit or falling back into Earth’s atmosphere to burn up.

Over a span of eighteen months, gravitational forces exerted by the Sun, Earth, and Moon, combined with solar activity, gradually degraded its trajectory. SpaceX director of NASA science and Dragon programs Julianna Scheiman explained the mechanics behind the drift.

Global Observatories Track the Lunar Collision

Scientists worldwide mobilized telescopes and orbital sensor suites to capture the event, though observing it proved exceptionally difficult. Because the impact site sat near the Moon’s western limb in daylight, ground-based instruments faced challenges. The United Arab Emirates’ Al Khatm Astronomical Observatory pointed its main telescope at the target from one minute before impact until five minutes afterward, though researchers reported no visible impact flash or dust plume emission through their equipment.

Calculations by the Astronomy Centre estimated that the collision would eject approximately 450 cubic meters of lunar soil and rock, equivalent to about 1,100 metric tons of material. While some debris might have risen briefly before falling back under the Moon’s weak gravity, the small angular separation from the lunar disk made direct visual confirmation from Earth nearly impossible without advanced orbital assets.

In orbit, agencies adjusted dedicated hardware to survey the aftermath. NASA alongside the ShadowCam instrument aboard South Korea’s Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter planned to capture before-and-after imagery of the site. NASA estimated the impact would carve out a crater approximately 60 feet wide and 12 feet deep, though independent researchers projected a wider excavation spanning up to 89 feet.

Scientific Interest Meets Growing Space Debris Concerns

While accidental lunar impacts by human-made hardware remain rare—with only one prior verified instance occurring on March 4, 2022, when a Chinese Long March 3C rocket stage struck the lunar far side—astronomers and policy experts argue the event underscores a wider problem. Bill Gray, creator of widely used astronomy software who mapped the rocket’s path months in advance, offered a pragmatic assessment of the collision.

Gray added a starker warning regarding Earth’s orbital environment, noting that things are getting crowded up there. He emphasized that the event highlights a certain carelessness about how leftover space hardware is disposed of.

Implications for Future Lunar Bases and Exploration

The accidental collision arrives as space agencies accelerate preparations for permanent infrastructure. NASA intends to establish a permanent moon base near the lunar south pole through its Artemis program, creating an enduring human presence for research and technological testing.
