SpaceX Targets US Mobile Market in EchoStar Talks

SpaceX is in talks with EchoStar regarding a potential acquisition of Boost Mobile or a network-sharing agreement, according to Deraktionaer. The discussions mark an aggressive push by Elon Musk to enter the multi-billion-dollar United States mobile market by pairing Starlink satellites with terrestrial wireless infrastructure.

Elon Musk Targets the US Mobile Market Through EchoStar Talks

SpaceX is navigating discussions with EchoStar to acquire Boost Mobile or secure an agreement to utilize its cellular network, according to a Washington Post report cited by Deraktionaer. For Elon Musk, the maneuver provides a shortcut into the United States mobile market, valued at approximately $235 billion. Boost Mobile already maintains an established customer base and mobile business, historically relying on network capacity from AT&T and T-Mobile.

Before opening discussions with EchoStar, SpaceX approached Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile for access to their networks. All three major carriers rejected the proposals. Consequently, Musk met last month with EchoStar Chairman Charlie Ergen to explore potential collaborations.

Combining Starlink Satellites with Terrestrial Infrastructure

The strategic appeal for SpaceX lies in merging its Starlink satellite constellation with traditional cellular infrastructure without needing to build an independent, nationwide ground network from scratch. Satellite connections can eliminate dead zones in remote territories, while dense metropolitan areas still require conventional ground towers. Combining both technologies aims to deliver a competitive advantage and pave the way for a proprietary mobile service offering.

Obstacles remain despite the strategic alignment. Boost Mobile’s current network access agreements would not necessarily transfer automatically to SpaceX upon acquisition. AT&T and T-Mobile retain the right to approve continued infrastructure usage.

Market Rebound and Financial Stakes for EchoStar and Deutsche Telekom

Financial markets reacted swiftly to the unfolding negotiations. EchoStar shares jumped five percent in pre-market US trading, while SpaceX shares ticked up about three percent, according to Deraktionaer reporting. Conversely, SpaceX rival Deutsche Telekom fell to the bottom of the DAX index.

Deraktionaer maintains a buy recommendation on SpaceX, noting the company is part of the publication’s depot. Börsenmedien AG board member and majority owner Bernd Förtsch holds direct and indirect positions in financial instruments related to SpaceX that could benefit from price movements resulting from the publication.
