Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has published its latest World Press Freedom Index. The report annually evaluates the situation for the exercise of journalistic activity in 180 countries and territories of the world. In this 2023 edition, the international analysts who have participated in the study have taken into account five indicators to give a vision of press freedom that takes into account the legal framework, the political, economic, sociocultural and security context of each analyzed territory.

Spain is in position 36 in the report of this 2023with a “rather good” situation, although it has fallen four places compared to the 2022 ranking. RSF highlights that in the country “political polarization in the media is growing” and communication professionals suffer “an already chronic precariousness “.

The press freedom situation is “very serious” in 31 countries, “difficult” in 42 and “problematic” in 55, while it is “good” or “fairly good” in 52 countries. Regarding the world ranking, Norway is at the top of the list for the seventh consecutive year, followed by Ireland and Denmark. At the bottom of the ranking, the final trio is made up of Asian countries: Vietnam (position 178), China (179) and North Korea (180) are the most repressive countries for the press.
