Spain: couple dies 45 minutes apart after 52 years of marriage

Even in death, they remained united. A Spanish couple in their eighties died on Sunday 45 minutes apart, after 52 years of marriage, reports the Spanish site ABC.

Candida, 89, died at 11:30 a.m. in a nursing home she had been in for several months after her cognitive abilities deteriorated. A few tens of minutes later, her husband Pepe, 86, died in turn, at the Central University Hospital of Asturias. He had been hospitalized over the weekend due to complications from his medical condition.

Born just 18 km apart, Pepe and Candida were married in 1970, in the Asturias region of northern Spain. He was a mechanic, she a housewife. It was in the city of Oviedo that they spent their life after their marriage, where they had no children. Like a full circle, the funeral of Pepe and Candida took place in the very church where they had married 52 years earlier.

“When we called to report their deaths, the first thing we were asked was if it was an accident. But in reality, it is a curious and even romantic coincidence,” said a niece of the couple.
