TWITTER – The Spanish public broadcaster welcomes the rectification made by Twitter after the company called the distinction a“erroneous”.

Last Tuesday, the official profile of RTVE (Spanish Radio and Television Corporation) on Twitter was tagged with “government funded media”. It was one of the last directives of Elon Musk at the head of the digital platform. A few hours later, the billionaire deleted the blue dots from accounts that had not subscribed to the paid version and provoked a wave of reactions among users.

RTVE expressed total disagreement with the categorization, deeming it “erroneous and contrary to the essence of the medium”. The television channel explained that it was a unilateral decision and asked Twitter to rectify it. The organization also proposed that, in all cases, the label be replaced by “Publicly Funded Media” (media financed by the public).

Three days later, Twitter rectified its decision and removed the controversial label from all of the public broadcaster’s corporate accounts: RTVE, RTVE Noticias, RTVE Comunicación y Participación and RTVE Play. Company sources have expressed satisfaction and are pleased that Mr. Musk’s team has backtracked.

Along with this withdrawal, the platform removed the gold badge from all corporate accounts dependent on RTVE, a symbol that identified them as “official” media. Since Friday, a good part of the Spanish newspapers and television channels no longer have it.

Although RTVE is managed by a board of directors made up of ten members elected by Parliament, the public company recalled that its “editorial independence” and that of its employees are protected by Law 17/2006, of June 5, on State Radio and Television.

This example is not isolated. The CBC/Radio-Canada group had experienced the same misadventure and had justified itself in the same way as to its presumed structural editorial independence.
