Electric mobility is advancing in Spain, although at a much lower rate than the rest of Europe. This is shown by the electromobility barometer of the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (Anfac)according to which in the second quarter, the development of electromobility in our country grows on average 1 point, compared to 1.5 on the average of the main EU countries.

According to this organization, in 2023, 4,632 new public access charging points will have been installed, reaching a total of 22,760 throughout Spain. To the 22,760 existing points, another 6,704 are added that are installed, but not operational due to the lack of any bureaucratic procedure or problem.

Breaking down these figures, during the second quarter, 2,517 new public access charging points have been launched, which for 2023 adds 4,632 new points.

Although the growth rate is maintained compared to the previous quarter, placing the total for the national territory at 22,760 points, the public access charging infrastructure still remains very far, both in number and installed power, from the objective of 45,000 charging points. necessary recharging this year and meet the emissions reduction objectives set in the Fit for 55.

Low power charging points

Of the total new charging infrastructure installed in the second quarter, 1,843 charging points have a capacity of less than or up to 22 kW. That is, 73% of the point growth occurs in this low power range. Currently, only 4% of the public access charging network (875 points in total) throughout the national territory has a power greater than 150 kW. As highlighted by ANFAC, it is necessary to progress in the development, not only of capillarity throughout the territory, but of high power that allows fast charging. Capillary nature is as important as the quality of public access charging points. The deployment of this type of high-power infrastructure, which allows recharging similar to the refueling experience of an internal combustion vehicle, is essential for the development of electric vehicles and an absolute priority for electric mobility with heavy vehicles.

The administrative difficulties in the installation and start-up process are reflected in the 6,475 points that are out of service, mainly because they have not been able to connect to the electrical distribution network or because they are in poor condition or damaged.

Electric cars

In the second quarter of 2023, the electrified vehicle penetration indicator obtains an average rating of 18.9 points, which represents a growth of 1.5 points, compared to the previous quarter. Although it achieves growth comparable to the increase of 1.8 points recorded in the European average, it still remains far from the 38.7 points out of 100 obtained by the European average, placing Spain 20 points below.

Spain occupies the last positions in the ranking, very far from the leading countries such as the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom, located above the European average.

During the first half of the year, Spain has registered a total of 55,544 electrified passenger cars (BEV+PHEV), improving the records of the previous year. This figure is still very far from the objective of 190,000 sales of this type of vehicle for the entire year 2023. A necessary objective to meet the emissions reduction requirements imposed by Brussels.

The Electromobility Barometer for the second quarter of 2023 once again shows that Spain is advancing in its development, but far from the pace of the European environment. In this period, the global indicator for Spain (which assesses the penetration of electrified vehicles and the installation of publicly accessible charging infrastructure with respect to the objective for 2030 according to the Fit for 55 package of measures) has increased one point, obtaining a total rating of 12 points out of 100. On the other hand, the European average is already at 25 points, with an improvement in the indicator of 1.5 points in the second quarter, increasing the gap between Spain and the continent.

Anfac highlights in the positive balance the results achieved by Portugal, which with a growth of more than two points, is positioned very close to the European average and distances itself from the bottom block of Europe, led by Spain and Italy. Portuguese policies around the electrified vehicle with taxation aimed at encouraging the acquisition of this type of automobile, especially for companies (segment most driving change), and a rapid and efficient information and deployment system for the development of infrastructure recharge, have allowed a notable improvement in Portugal in the global indicator.

Regarding the global indicator by Autonomous Communities, Madrid, Navarra and Catalonia remain in the Top-3 of the ranking. It is worth highlighting the growth of Asturias of 1.9 points after improving both in the market and in infrastructure, which allows it to get closer to the national average.
