The Spanish premier has dissolved parliament and called early elections

The Spanish premier Pedro Sanchez decided to dissolve Parliament and call snap elections for July 23 after the defeat in Sunday’s administration. It is a political tsunami that many feared but no one expected in such proportions. Addressing the nation on TV from the Moncloa palace, Snchez announced that he had communicated to King Felipe VI, head of state, the meeting of an extraordinary Council of Ministers on Monday afternoon to dissolve the Courts and proceed with the calling of general elections. The prime minister added that it was right for the Spaniards to speak now. They are de facto resignations: Snchez chooses not to conclude the mandate that should have ended with the general elections at the end of the year and anticipates the national challenge with the right by five months

.

A decision that pushes the opposing camp – the conservatives of the People’s Party and the extreme right of Vox – to speed up the agreements for an electoral pact that many within the PP oppose, starting with the president of the Community of Madrid, great triumphant of the vote on Sunday. But Snchez also forces the progressive camp to find a meeting point to prevent a future right-wing government.

The prime minister has personally assumed responsibility for the electoral outcome. A blow both at the municipal level – the PP gets 31.5% against 28.1% of the PSOE which loses key cities such as Seville and Valencia – and at the regional level: the conservatives win seven autonomous communities out of the 12 where they voted. Only two — the Community of Madrid and La Rioja — obtain an absolute majority. In all the others they will be forced to ally themselves with Santiago Abascal’s Vox party, which last night warned: We are absolutely indispensable.

After a night of frantic meetings, Snchez’s drastic response arrived. Submitting the mandate to the will of the people, not without deploring the fact that the new political map draws new majorities made up of Pp and Voz. The premier took the opportunity to defend the work of his government, who had to face the Covid pandemic first and then the economic consequences of the war in Ukraine. We are facing a clear path to growth, employment and social cohesion, Moncloa said on Monday morning, claiming that his executive had implemented the major reforms promised in his investiture speech, government program and agreements with the European Commission.

Many newspapers point out that the PSOE, in terms of numbers, has not lost many voters. Yes they are instead the allies of Podemos Unidas have melted like snow in the sun, who only enter a regional council.

To remember that Spain assumes the rotating presidency of the European Commission on 1 July. For this reason, the premier said, it is essential that the Spanish people clarify the policies that must be implemented and the forces that must implement them. The best thing is that the Spaniards take the floor to define the political path of the country.
