On his second trip to China from 2023, the Spanish socialist leader participated on Tuesday in an economic forum in Shanghai after having met the day before with the Chinese president, Xi Jinping, in Beijing.

“Spain is committed to a relationship with China based on openness and we want more trade and investments with China” and “we also want a European Union and a China open to the world beyond the realities geopolitical y geoeconomics”, Sanchez said.

“For this reason, we are committed to honest dialogue to redirect existing tensions that are largely the result of the announcement of the imposition tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles,” the head of government explained.

“What we are ultimately advocating is a negotiated and agreed solution within the framework of the World Trade Organization “I hope that this will help develop balanced and fair economic relations that avoid any type of trade escalation that would not benefit anyone,” he continued. At the head of the European Union’s fourth-largest economy and its second-largest automobile producer, Sánchez is visiting China amid heightened trade tensions between Brussels and Beijing.

Last month, the executive arm of the European Union has initiated a series of proceedings against the Asian giant, the most sensitive of which is focused on Chinese electric vehicles sold in its markets.

The European Commission then announced its decision to increase tariffs on these products from China, including those of the American manufacturer Tesla, which has a plant in Shanghai.

China responded by opening investigations into EU trade practices deemed unfair in the milk products and pork derivatives.

Spain is the main European exporter of pork products China, with more than 560 thousand tons exported last year, according to the professional organization Interporc.

On Monday in Beijing, Sanchez called for “defending together a fair trade order” and proposed to Xi “resolving differences through negotiation, in a spirit of dialogue and collaboration.”

For his part, the Chinese president expressed his wish that “Spain continues to provide a fair business environment, fair, safe and non-discriminatory for Chinese companies investing and operating in Spain.”

Chinese vehicle manufacturers put their foot on the accelerator and with alternatives that combine price and quality they managed to conquer the market not only in Europe but also in Latin America, surpassing the United States and Brazil.

In the last five years, China has quadrupled its sales in Latin America.
