The government in Madrid officially submitted the 54-year-old’s candidacy. Corresponding media reports were confirmed by Calviño on Saturday.

“The presentation of this candidacy does not affect my work as first vice prime minister,” she said in Cadiz, in the south of the country. You have very good chances. Calviño would be the first woman to head the Luxembourg-based EIB.

According to media reports, 71-year-old Hoyer intends to step down after the end of his second six-year term as President of the EIB at the end of the year and not to stand for another term. The election of the new President will take place at the meeting of the Eurogroup and the EU’s informal Economic and Financial Affairs Council on 15 and 16 September in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. The person elected takes office on January 1st. Among Calviño’s competitors is the EU Commissioner for Competition, Margrethe Vestager.

The EIB is the bank of the EU and claims to be the largest multilateral financial institution in the world. Since it was founded in 1958, it has invested more than EUR 1 trillion. Climate protection is currently the priority. Most recently, however, the EIB has also been involved in supporting Ukraine.
