(ANSA) – ROME, APRIL 15 – On the occasion of World Chagas Disease Day, which is celebrated on April 14, the National Institute for Infectious Diseases ‘Lazzaro Spallanzani’ Irccs recalls the need to keep attention high towards a of the most common tropical diseases.
A disease that is among those forgotten due to the absence of pediatric drugs, the absence of drugs approved in Europe, the difficulty of finding diagnostic tests and the progressive reduction of research funds in Italy and globally.
Chagas disease, also called American trypanosomiasis, is an infectious disease caused by a parasite transmitted to humans mainly by the bite of a bedbug that lives in rural areas of endemic countries in Latin America, which in some subjects can cause serious complications in intestinal and cardiac level even after decades.
The screening test consists of a simple blood sample which is analyzed for the search for specific antibodies against this pathology. It can be carried out without the need for a reservation at the ‘Di Raimondo’ Pavilion of the Inmi Spallanzani from Monday to Saturday from 7.30 to 11.00 by presenting a prescription from your family doctor. The test is aimed at people originating from Latin America and is particularly recommended in women of childbearing age to prevent the passage of the infection from mother to newborn, a possibility of transmission also present in Italy.
People who, for various reasons, have stayed for a long time in a Latin American country can also access the test.
Carrying out the test will allow you to access treatment if necessary. (HANDLE).
