Saving for retirement is not one of the preferences of Spaniards. A study ensures that more than half of the Spanish population does not save to complement their pension when they retire. The figure is somewhat higher than the EU average, which is almost 40%.

Antonio Luis Gallardo, head of Studies at Asufin, the association of financial users in Spain, explains that in Europe there is greater “awareness” about the need to “complement that retirement.” “It is not because of a lack of culture, as they say… Spaniards save by buying housing,” says Gallardo, as can be seen in the video above.

For most of those surveyed, raising money in the long term is completely impossible. Ignorance is another reason why Spaniards do not save for their retirement

9% do admit that they are considering starting to save, an action. According to Gallardo, “it is recommended that, as far as possible, we consider savings as just another expense. Every time we get paid, we allocate an item such as housing, food…”.

The most cautious claim to have a pension plan, employment plan and other investment products. 26% claim to do so through an individual pension product. 13% say they do it through an employment plan, while 11%, through other investment products.
