Spanish Army Sponsors Antarctic Penguins for Conservation

by Ahmed Ibrahim World Editor

Some life forms couldn’t survive without outside help. Those inhabiting extreme environments—where ice dominates and vegetation is scarce—frequently depend on human intervention to ensure their survival. In icy regions, progressive thawing, food loss, and pollution threaten species adapted to very specific conditions. Humans have taken on some of that responsibility, creating programs to conserve at-risk populations through protection, monitoring, and awareness initiatives.

These initiatives focus on reducing damage from human activity, but also on teaching why action is necessary. With this, cooperation between people and institutions becomes a useful tool for maintaining natural balance and avoiding the disappearance of species that can only survive with help.

The Army Launches an Open Campaign to Support Antarctic Penguins

The Army has announced a new edition of its penguin sponsorship campaign, published on its official channels, aimed at raising awareness about the conservation of the Antarctic ecosystem. This initiative allows citizens to participate in the symbolic protection of the birds that inhabit Deception Island, one of the most studied enclaves on the icy continent. The proposal promotes dissemination and environmental education, as well as supporting the scientific missions that Spain maintains in the area, which strengthens the national presence in polar research.

The campaign is free and open to anyone interested. Those who register do not physically adopt an animal, but participate in an environmental awareness exercise. With each sponsorship, it is remembered that the conservation of Antarctic fauna depends on maintaining a balance between humans and the environment. This symbolic gesture serves to reinforce environmental education and knowledge of the Antarctic ecosystem, one of the most sensitive to climate variations.

The Army disseminated the start of the campaign through its official channels, inviting citizens to collaborate. The objective is to bring research and environmental protection closer to society, showing how military work in Antarctica also has a scientific and ecological dimension. With this new edition, the Armed Forces continue a work of dissemination and environmental commitment that has been maintained for decades.

One of the main novelties is the possibility of sponsoring eight different species of penguins that inhabit Deception Island. In previous years, the protagonist was only the chinstrap penguin, but now seven other species, including phocids, are included to reflect the diversity of the ecosystem. The expansion seeks to highlight the biological richness of the area and promote a global vision of Antarctic conservation.

A Proposal Born in the 90s Maintains its Pull Thanks to Citizen Participation

The origin of this initiative dates back to 1992, when sponsorship diplomas were prepared by hand and distributed among members of the Army’s Antarctic Campaign. Its popularity grew from the 23rd campaign, in 2009-2010, after a broadcast on an autonomous television station. Since then, the system has been modernized to manage applications digitally. In the 38th campaign, corresponding to 2024-2025, more than 535,000 diplomas were exceeded, a figure that reflects citizen interest in participating.

The sponsorship process remains simple. Just access the link enabled by the organization, complete the form and receive an accreditation diploma. The organization recalls that the proposed names for the penguins must be respectful and consistent with the educational nature of the activity.

With this, the 2025/2026 campaign continues the awareness work started more than three decades ago, uniting Antarctica, dissemination and environmental commitment in a supportive and free gesture that brings science and nature closer to thousands of people.
