Spanish oil company fined for oil spill in Peru

Peruvian authorities have fined Spanish oil company Repsol more than $121,000 for failing to clean up the aftermath of the oil spill. This was reported by the Ministry of the Environment of the country.

The work carried out by Repsol in accordance with the administrative measures of the Environmental Assessment and Enforcement Agency (OEFA) was inspected by the Minister of the Environment, Modesto Montoya.

“The fine imposed on Repsol is <...> 460,000 Peruvian sols. This measure will be consistently applied until the fulfillment of obligations to eliminate the consequences, ”the message says.

The oil spill on the shores north of the capital of Peru occurred in the middle of last month due to the eruption of an underwater volcano in the Kingdom of Tonga in the Pacific Ocean. According to Repsol, more than 10,000 barrels of hydrocarbons entered the water while unloading the tanker.

The government has declared a 90-working-day state of emergency in the coastal marine area following the oil spill, the agency said earlier.

The National Service for Natural Areas Protected by the State confirmed that the spilled oil also affected the 1,758.1-hectare Ancon protected area, which affects the biodiversity of ecosystems. The decree of the Minister of the Environment states that the oil spill also poses a risk to public health.

At the end of the year, the oil company Amplify Energy was found guilty of an environmental disaster in early October in California off the coast of Huntington Beach (Orange County) there was a large oil spill, as a result of which about 25,000 gallons (95,000 liters) of oil entered the Pacific Ocean.
