Professional sources rrevealed that several agricultural cooperatives have started to import and market Spanish oil in Morocco after receiving the green light from the relevant authorities to import and cover the huge shortage duedue to weak local production and high prices.
The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Water and Forestry, Mohamed Siddiqi, had personally confirmed a few days ago that imports have always been open, but this time his ministry will work to encourage them and diversify the sources of import.
The Kelaa cooperatives of Sraghna, for example, have informed their customers that they will begin marketing Spanish olive oil in the next few days. All this, Rue20 points out, after Morocco was, until recently, in the club of ten countries that export the most olive oil. Today, however, it is unable to meet the needs of its domestic market, after the olive oil supply chain has suffered a serious blow in recent years, due to drought and a heat wave.
Spain is considered the largest producer of olive oil in the Mediterranean basin, with estimates indicating such production This year it could reach 1,300,000 tonnes, which represents a 52% increase compared to the 853,000 tonnes produced last year. Tunisia also stands out as one of the countries that has achieved a significant improvement in its harvest and expectations indicate that its production will reach 325 thousand tonnes, compared to 200 thousand tonnes last season.
On the other hand, Italy is facing a more difficult situation due to drought and heat waves, which have seriously affected olive groves. This year’s production estimates in Italy range between 170,000 and 200,000 tonnes, which represents a notable drop compared to the 329,000 tonnes produced in the current agricultural campaign.
In Greece, the favorable climate has generated positive expectations, as production is expected to reach between 230,000 and 250,000 tonnes, compared to the 155,000 tonnes recorded in the current season. Portugal could also see an improvement in its olive oil production, as it is expected to increase from 158,000 tonnes in 2024 to a potential 170,000 tonnes next season.
Meanwhile, Morocco is facing a significant decline in its production, with estimates indicating it will fall from the current level of 106,000 tonnes to almost half in the next agricultural season.
