Another chapter has been found in the controversy surrounding the Spanish women’s football team. After Montse Tomé, the new national coach, called up 20 of the players who, last Friday, had announced their unavailability to serve the country following Luis Rubiales’ kiss to Jenni Hermoso, a new statement has now emerged to reinforce such intention.

In the text issued, the athletes reinforced their “firm will” not to be called for “justified reasons”, reiterating that “nothing different was transmitted to any member of the RFEF”, contrary to what the new technical manager of the women’s team admitted.

Following this, the athletes also refer to the possibility of moving forward with «possible legal consequences» towards the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), in order to «make the best decision» for their respective professional and health futures.

Here is the statement in full:

«The players of the senior women’s national football team come, following the call and consequent press conference of the new national selector, Montse Tomé, to declare the following: what was expressed in our statement of September 15, 2023, makes clear and without any room for other interpretation, our firm will not to be summoned for justified reasons. These statements remain fully valid. In the days following this statement, we would like to make it public that nothing different was transmitted to any member of the RFEF, and we therefore expressly request that the information that is transmitted publicly is accurate. We, as elite professional players and after everything that happened today, are going to study the possible legal consequences that the RFEF exposes us to by placing us on a list in which we had asked not to be called for reasons already explained publicly and with more details to the RFEF, and make the best decision for our future and our health. We consider it relevant to highlight, in this regard, that the call was not made in accordance with paragraph 2 of article 3 of Annex I of the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, so we understand that the RFEF is not in conditions to demand our presence. We regret once again that our Federation has placed us in a situation that we would never have wanted
