The so-called start-up bonus is becoming more and more wobbly. After doubts from the Greens and FDP, the SPD parliamentary group is now also against the idea.

The SPD parliamentary group wants to stop the bonus decided by the Federal Cabinet for citizens’ benefit recipients who take a job and keep it for at least a year. The social policy spokesman for the SPD parliamentary group, Martin Rosemann, told the “Bild” newspaper (Monday edition): “The start-up financing was an express wish of Robert Habeck. As a specialist politician in the SPD, we share the concerns that the Ministry of Labor has always expressed.”

The SPD supported the instrument as part of the overall package of changes to citizens’ money. “But if criticism is now also expressed from the Green group and the FDP also shares the concerns, then there is little reason to stick with it,” Rosemann told the newspaper.

Last week, the Federal Cabinet decided on a bonus of 1,000 euros for long-term unemployed people who work in a job subject to social security contributions for at least twelve months. The regulation is scheduled to come into force on January 1, 2025.

According to the Federal Ministry of Economics, the bonus is intended to “strengthen the taking up of regular, long-term employment relationships”. The long-term unemployed should be able to “actually overcome and leave” the state’s basic security system.
