“It’s a bit strange to me that this has become some kind of strange discussion lately. Commissioner G. Landsbergis or we will no longer continue the discussion. I think this is a bit of a non-constructive approach.
I don’t think that this attitude has been formed in the Government or somewhere else, and in the public space this question is raised in such a flat, primitive way”, asserted G. Nausėda.
According to him, after the former Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaja Kallas, became the new representative of the Community’s foreign policy, Lithuania practically had no more chances to apply for portfolios related to foreign policy, unless they were very close to foreign policy.
“Let’s understand one thing – the portfolio we are talking about went to Estonian Prime Minister K. Kallas thanks to the party-sharing formula. Such portfolios managing foreign affairs practically no longer exist, or they are closely associated with foreign policy.
Therefore, I think that Lithuania could best focus on portfolios related to the economy, which are no less important and provide an opportunity to solve very important issues outside of Lithuania. Sometimes, it seems to me, we do not understand that commissioners are not commissioners working for Lithuania, but commissioners working for the EU.
Those portfolios will allow the representative of Lithuania to really participate in important European projects. If you associate this with G. Landsberg’s candidacy, for me, the economy is hardly compatible with Mr. G. Landsberg’s sphere of interest,” the country’s leader said.
G. Nausėda did not want to comment on the rumors spread by the opposition, that the Government refused the transport commissioner’s portfolio offered to her, because it did not match the interests of G. Landsbergis.
“I don’t comment on all sorts of rumours. Don’t be surprised, you will still hear all kinds of rumors. I think that we have to understand a very simple thing – today we are still only talking about the submission of candidacies and specific people to the President of the European Commission”, he explained.
