Special drive to detect ‘Operation Oil’ fraud: Minister Veena George | Kerala | Deshabhimani

Thiruvananthapuram> Health Minister Veena George has said that the Food Safety Department has launched a special drive for coconut oil called ‘Operation Oil’ across the state to stop the sale of adulterated coconut oil in the state. Over 100 centers were inspected in the last two days. Notices have been issued and fines have been imposed against those found deficient. Inspections by the Food Safety Department will continue in the coming days. The Minister requested that all coconut oil producers should obtain brand registration compulsorily.

A manufacturer is allowed to launch only one brand of coconut oil in the state. This will be strictly enforced as part of curbing the sale of adulterated coconut oil. It is to prevent the sale of coconut oil without brand registration and to subject such coconut oil to seizure and legal action. The presence of sulfur in the oil is also checked.

The Department of Food Safety is doing a lot of work in the state. To ensure safe food, the campaign ‘Good food is a nation’s right’ was conceived and implemented. As part of this campaign, checks were intensified by implementing Operation Shawarma, Operation Matsya and Operation Jaggery. Since October, 4905 inspections have been conducted in various districts. 651 samples have been collected and sent to labs. Notices were issued against 294 institutions and fines were collected. 66 night inspections and 25 check post focused inspections were conducted in various districts. 446 inspections were conducted as part of Operation Matsya. 6959 kg of spoiled fish was seized and destroyed. As part of Operation Shawarma, 537 tests were conducted. Action was taken against 177 institutions that did not comply with the norms.

The state has issued guidelines for making shawarma. Implemented Clean Street Food Hub project. The all-time record in non-tax revenue has been achieved through the excellent work of the Food Security Department. Strict action is being taken against establishments that do not have a license or registration with the Food Safety Department. The State Food Safety Department has been ranked second in Food Safety and Standards Authority of India’s Food Safety Index for its outstanding performance. In addition, four cities in the state received national awards in FSSAI’s Eat Right Challenge.
