Nissan⁤ Tests ‌Paint That Can Cool Cars

Published: ‍ August⁣ 9, 2024, 7:38 AM

Nissan is currently ‌conducting experiments on a revolutionary paint that boasts the ability to cool vehicles. In November 2023, ‍the company ⁤initiated a 12-month trial at ‍Tokyo‘s Haneda International Airport, applying the paint to their ‍electric‍ NV100 model.

Early ‍findings are ‌highly promising, with the painted ⁣NV100 registering a 12-degree cooler body temperature and a 5-degree cooler interior temperature ⁤compared to vehicles with conventional paint.

A cooler interior not only enhances‌ passenger comfort but also offers practical advantages. ‌By reducing the reliance on air conditioning, fuel ⁢consumption in‌ gasoline vehicles is minimized, while electric cars benefit from ‍preserved battery charge and increased autonomy.

Developed in⁣ collaboration with Radi-Cool, a specialist in radiant cooling technologies, this ⁣paint incorporates synthetic metamaterials with unique properties not ⁣found‌ in nature.

The ⁤cooling mechanism of this innovative paint is ‌attributed to two microscopic particles. One particle‌ reflects the near-infrared rays responsible for heating traditional paint, while the other generates⁣ electromagnetic ⁤waves that ⁢dissipate heat. This combined action effectively reduces the temperature of‍ the car’s exterior surfaces, ‍including the ⁢roof, hood, doors, and panels.
