Udumalai: As the impact of heat has increased after the monsoon, the farmers have urged to give importance to the plans for setting up farm huts in the arable lands.

In Udumalai and Kudimangalam areas, the source of water from borewells is for various cultivations.

Construction of additional borewells when ground water level decreases; Farmers are carrying out work including deepening.

Especially, when the North East Monsoon season ends and the summer season begins, the supply to the borewells is affected and there is not enough water for cultivation.

Also, 24-hour three-phase power supply is not available in most areas. Therefore, the method of setting up farm huts to store the water obtained from the borewells and flow it to the crops is useful.

Farmers said: In terms of flow, even if a borewell is installed, the water flow decreases during summers. So, we store the available water only for a few hours and then water it to the crops.

In particular, we build farm huts to store water and use it. Formerly, the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme; Encouragement to set up farm huts through the Department of Agriculture and Agricultural Engineering; Subsidy schemes were also in operation.

Due to lack of drought in the last few years, there has been a delay in these projects. In this summer also, the farm plot subsidy schemes should be re-implemented so that the crop cultivation area does not decrease.

Awareness about this should also be created among the farmers. By setting up farm huts, even during the rainy season, rain water can be collected and used for agriculture.

Thus, they said.
