Neurologist discusses dementia at specialist lecture in Prad

On November 24th, over 100 people attended a specialist lecture on dementia titled “Fog in the Head” by neurologist Dr. Susanne Kofler at the Bürgersaal in Prad. The lecture was organized by the Prad Education Committee and aimed to raise awareness about dementia, which is increasingly prevalent due to demographic changes and longer life expectancy.

According to the State Institute for Statistics ASTAT, there are currently around 13,000 people with dementia in South Tyrol, with approximately 1,000 new cases each year. Dr. Kofler emphasized that dementia is not a normal part of aging and discussed the early warning signs that should prompt a visit to a family doctor and eventually a specialist. Early diagnosis and treatment can help maintain cognitive function for longer and provide a basis for future life planning.

The lecture also addressed the various causes of dementia, including factors that can be influenced such as physical exercise, mental activity, social contacts, and a healthy diet. Dr. Kofler also highlighted the importance of addressing legal and medical decisions early on, such as driving, power of attorney, living will, legal capacity, and will.

In addition to medical contact points, those affected and their families can seek support from the South Tyrolean association “ASAA – Alzheimer Südtirol Alto Adige” for guidance and resources. The Education Committee expressed their gratitude to Dr. Kofler for her informative presentation, which was followed by a networking opportunity and private conversations with the doctor.

The lecture served as an important opportunity for the community to learn about dementia and the resources available for those affected, as well as their families and caregivers.]
