The neurosurgery service of the Hospital de Especialidades Guayaquil Dr. Abel Gilbert Pontón of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), on April 12, 2023, performed spinal decompression on a 29-year-old patient, who presented severe pain and weakness in his legs due to a tumor in his spine.
The lesion presented by the patient oppressed the nerve roots of his spine and was destroying his vertebral bodies. The corresponding studies were carried out and he was taken to the operating room to decompress the affected area and take a tumor sample for the respective biopsy.
The procedure was carried out by a team made up of specialists in neurosurgery, with support from anesthesiology and nursing. Through a microscope vision and the help of the fluoroscopy technique, it was possible to obtain images in real time. This was how it was possible to decompress the area where the tumor affected.
Currently, the patient gradually recovers and is in outpatient check-ups in different specialties that provide assistance and treatment to restore his health and thus develop his daily activities.
