Europe, and in particular France, was crossed by the Northern Lights this Sunday, November 5 in the early evening, as evidenced by numerous photos shared on social networks. From Pas-de-Calais to the Alps, and as far as Slovakia and Ukraine, the phenomenon, usually confined to latitudes closer to the pole, has manifested itself on the Old Continent.
In question, a wave of solar particles which causes “a geomagnetic storm and the formation of an aurora borealis visible from France“, explain on the scientific mediator Pierre Henriquet.
An aurora borealis appears when jets of hot and magnetic particles, generated by solar flares, reach the Earth’s environment. The streams of ionized particles projected at colossal speeds then strike the Earth’s magnetic field, which serves as a shield protecting the planet. “These charged particles will excite the particles of the atmosphere, in particular oxygen and nitrogen, which will give green and pink respectively» of an aurora borealis, explains to AFP Éric Lagadec, astronomer at the Observatory of the Côte d’Azur.
