Still science fiction so far, maybe reality soon: Speech AI like GPT is to be used as an autonomously acting helper. But what exactly does that mean?

Zen years have passed since Joaquin Phoenix gave us a possibly realistic glimpse into the future in his role as Theodore Twombly in the film “Her” – as a user of an intelligent operating system that, as an autonomous digital string puller, not only organized his life, but also him on the side with the appealing voice of Scarlett Johansson emotionally bonded more and more. At least the former might have been envied. Because a digital assistant that organizes everything in a charming and forward-looking way that you don’t want to waste time on yourself would undoubtedly be an enormous relief in everyday life. At the time, that vision seemed as alluring as it was distant. That’s different today.

The latest hype in the field of artificial intelligence over the past few weeks has been the development of autonomous agents based on the Open AI company’s GPT language models. Basically, these should accomplish something similar to the operating system “Samantha” in the film “Her”: You give them a complex order and they carry it out independently. For example, an order could be: “Help my Twitter account to get more followers”. The agent would then possibly first look at accounts with a large number of followers and derive reasons for their success. In the second step, he would then select practicable strategies for success, perhaps posting cute animal pictures, and implement this strategy for his own account.
