Speech from the Throne: HM the King highlights interdependence between water, energy and food security (expert)

Marrakech – The Speech delivered by HM King Mohammed VI, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the Throne Day, highlights the interdependence between water, energy and food security, calling for strategic measures to ensure sustainable management of water resources, stressed Laila Mandi, university lecturer and member of the Water Academy of France.

To address the challenges caused by six consecutive years of drought, which have affected water reserves and groundwater, the Sovereign called for urgent and innovative measures, including the implementation of the National Program for Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation 2020-2027, the strengthening of water supply through the construction of new large dams and Interconnection projects between hydraulic basins, noted Ms. Mandi in a statement to MAP.

The successful implementation of this Royal vision requires close coordination between different sectors and between water policy and agricultural policy as well as good governance, particularly during periods of water shortage, said Ms. Mandi, former director of the National Center for Studies and Research on Water and Energy (CNEREE) under Cadi Ayyad University.

In his speech, HM King Mohammed VI also called for the adoption of modern technologies and the promotion of drip irrigation, while stressing the importance of collaboration between the different actors for the sustainable management of water resources, noted Ms. Mandi.

At the same time, the Royal Speech emphasizes the importance of citizens and institutions being responsible for water conservation and preventing waste, she concluded.
