Speeding Tragedy: Three Young Adults Killed in Violent Crash near Chandler, Quebec

by time news

The three young adults who lost their lives in a violent crash near Chandler last November were traveling at speeds of more than 200 km/h on Route 132 before ending their race against the trees.

“High speed is the main reason for drivers losing control and hitting the road […] was impaired,” concluded the coroner in the case, Jean-Pierre Chamberland.

The tragic incident occurred on a sharp turn in the Newport area on the morning of November 8. The trio were returning from a visit to a local bar.

Only two hours later did Sûreté du Québec (SQ) police officers arrive at the scene of the accident when they found one of the victims, Joey Huard, lying on the grass after being ejected from the vehicle. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Mr Huard, 20, Magdy Lévesque, 18, and Anthony Comeau, 21, all died within a few hours at the hospital centre.

Average 201 km/h

In their investigation, authorities were able to trace the route of the car using surveillance cameras and information contained in the cell phone of one of the victims.

They were thus able to determine that the three were traveling between 160 km/h and 168 km/h in the Gascon sector at approximately 12:32 a.m. But about thirty minutes later, when the collision occurred, “the vehicles were traveling between 200 and 206 km/h, with an average of approximately 201 km/h”.

The limit on this section of road is set at 90 km/h. In addition, no other motorists were seen by surveillance cameras, ruling out the theory of a race or chase.

Toxicological analysis also made it possible to determine that the driver, who had received his license barely 8 months earlier, had a blood ethanol level of 118 mg/100 ml. Remember that the 80 mg/100 ml limit is only effective for motorists over 22 years of age.
