“I learned of my brother’s death on Facebook: the local radio had published an article saying that a man in his thirties had died near the quarry, says Candice Carton. I had a bad feeling, I called the police, it was him… The company waited until the next day to contact our mother. » His brother Cédric was reportedly hit by a stone following a mine blast on July 28, 2021, in a quarry in Wallers-en-Fagne (North). He had worked for seventeen years for the Comptoir des limestones et materials, a subsidiary of the Colas group.

Two and a half years later, there is nothing to certify the causes of the death of the 41-year-old welder-mechanic. Initially closed, the gendarmerie investigation was reopened in September 2023 following the conclusions of the labor inspectorate, which identified the ten infractions for which the company was responsible. Cédric Carton did not have the box for lone workers, which triggers an alarm in the event of a fall. “They found him two hours later, remembers his sister. The director of the quarry told me that my brother was safe, and that he had collapsed… even though he had a gaping hole 20 centimeters deep from his throat to his thorax. » In search of answers, she wanted to file a complaint twice, each of which was refused, multiplied the letters to the prosecutor, hired two lawyers… Without having the end of this sad story.

What happened ? Is it the “fault of bad luck”, the “risks of the profession”? Who is responsible ? Every year, hundreds of families are confronted with these questions after the death of a loved one in a work accident (AT), i.e. “by the act or in the course of work, whatever the cause”.

“A truck driver was found dead in his truck”, “A 44-year-old worker was electrocuted”, “A man dies crushed by a tree branch”, “Two Romanian workers, a father and his son, died on a construction site in Istres [Bouches-du-Rhône] »…The X account of Matthieu Lépinea professor of history and geography, who has been recording dramatic accidents since 2019 based on local press clippings, illustrates the scale of the phenomenon. Twenty-eight have been counted since January.

Fatal accidents twice as frequent among temporary workers

In 2022, according to the latest known figures, 738 deaths were recorded among recognized AT. That’s two deaths per day. A figure up 14% over one year, but stable compared to 2019. And, for around fifteen years, it has no longer declined. Added to this are 286 fatal travel accidents (occurring between home and work) and 203 deaths resulting from an occupational disease.
