More and more French monuments are offering accommodation for a weekend in an exceptional setting, relaxing and far from the crowds. So, holidaymakers do not deprive themselves, especially in the Val-de-Loire.

It is the largest monastic city in Europe inherited from the Middle Ages. In the Val-de-Loire, the Abbey of Fontevraud, founded in the 12th century, houses the queen of France, then of England: Eleanor of Aquitaine. The abbey is also one of the rare historical monuments where it is possible to spend the night there. A couple comes to stay in silence in this four-star hotel. A night in a double room costs between 120 and 150 euros. The rooms have a sober and refined decor.

One of the largest cloisters in Europe

To decipher the secrets of Fontevraud Abbey, travelers are accompanied by a guide. One of the centerpieces is the kitchen. The couple then discovers the heart of the monastery, one of the largest cloisters in Europe. “We haven’t met anyone since the start of our visit, so that’s really a privilege”, says Claire Crouand, tourist at Fontevraud Abbey. Breakfast is served in the cloister.
