Spider-Man: Brand New Day Eyes Record $173M Opening Day in the U.S

Sony and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day is tracking toward an all-time record opening day, including previews, with estimates ranging between $167 million and $173 million. According to industry sources, this figure would surpass the previous first-day and preview record of $157.4 million set by Avengers: Endgame. It also significantly exceeds the $121.96 million opening Friday and preview total of Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Projected for Record-Breaking Opening Day

The film, which released in theaters on July 31, 2026, is a $225 million net production featuring Tom Holland and Zendaya. Early momentum was driven by $80 million in advance ticket sales, and the movie has already outstripped the $50 million Thursday night previews achieved by Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021.

Historic Preview Performance and Theater Demand

The film saw an explosion of walk-up business during late evening hours, leading to a revised preview total of $72 million. This amount was so substantial that Sony was initially unable to count the totals. This performance puts the film on a trajectory for a first Friday exceeding $100 million including previews, a milestone reached by only five previous films: Avengers: Endgame, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avengers: Infinity War, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Demand has been particularly high at major multiplexes. For example, the AMC Lincoln Center in New York City scheduled 36 showtimes for the day, while Los Angeles locations saw even higher volume, including 40 showtimes at AMC Century City, 43 at Regal Sherman Oaks Galleria, and 44 at L.A. Live.

Domestic Weekend Projections

While some analysts suggest the film could potentially challenge the domestic opening record of $357.1 million held by Avengers: Endgame, other estimates are more conservative. Box Office Pro has forecasted a domestic opening weekend between $230 million and $250 million. However, other industry estimates suggest a higher trajectory, with a best estimate north of $330 million across 4,487 theaters.

If the film reaches $330 million, it would become the second-best opening at the North American box office, surpassing the $260.1 million start of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Even a lower estimate of $280 million would still place the film $20 million ahead of No Way Home’s debut.

One projected path to a $342 million start involves a $95 million Friday (excluding previews), followed by a flat $95 million on Saturday and approximately $80 million on Sunday, representing a 16% decline.

Market Impact and Competition

The overall North American marketplace may also set an all-time record this weekend, potentially earning between $407 million and $412 million. This would beat the $402 million total generated by all films during the opening weekend of Avengers: Endgame from April 26-28, 2019.

The film is competing against several other titles, including:

  • Odyssey: Currently in 3,942 theaters with a weekly total of $344.4 million.
  • Toy Story 5: In 3,375 theaters with a total of $455.3 million.
  • Moana: In 4,015 theaters with a total of $109.4 million.
  • Minions & Monsters: In 3,386 theaters with a total of $162.5 million.
  • Hadestown: In 1,949 theaters.

Unlike Spider-Man: No Way Home, Brand New Day is not playing in IMAX theaters, as those screens are currently reserved for The Odyssey. Sony is instead utilizing other Premium Large Format (PLF) screens, such as Dolby, where the film is expected to break further records.

Plot and Production Details

The sequel returns Peter Parker to his street-level roots and involves a dangerous genetic mutation. The plot features Spider-Man facing off against the Hulk and potentially Jean Grey, with assistance from the Punisher.
