LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. – A Central Florida resident is attempting the grueling dopey Challenge at the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend after a remarkable recovery from emergency spinal fusion surgery. Jessica Judge, a local runner, is preparing to run 48.6 miles over four consecutive days, beginning Thursday, January 11th.her participation is notably inspiring given the severe neck injury she sustained in 2022.
Judge’s life took a dramatic turn during a routine chiropractic appointment in 2022 when she suffered a life-threatening neck injury. Walt Disney World officials confirmed the injury required immediate surgical intervention – an emergency spinal fusion – and initially, doctors doubted she would ever run competitively again. The surgery addressed a critical instability in her cervical spine, but left her with permanent nerve damage.
Following extensive and dedicated rehabilitation, Judge has overcome significant obstacles to regain her physical strength and endurance. She is now ready to tackle the Dopey Challenge, which consists of a 5K on Thursday, a 10K on Friday, a half-marathon on Saturday, and a full marathon on Sunday. Her determination serves as a powerful example of resilience and the potential for recovery even after devastating injuries.
For those not attempting the full Dopey Challenge, the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend offers other options, including Goofy’s Race and a Half Challenge, which combines the half-marathon and marathon distances. Judge’s story highlights the inclusive spirit of the event, welcoming runners of all abilities and backgrounds. Her prosperous completion of the Dopey Challenge will be a testament to her unwavering spirit and the power of perseverance.
