Splenomegaly: Symptoms of an enlarged spleen

Splenomegaly: how is it treated?

Once the cause of the splenomegaly, i.e. an underlying disease, is identified, it is treated accordingly. With successful therapy of the underlying disease, the enlargement of the spleen usually regresses.

Patients with an enlarged spleen who do not suffer from any symptoms do not necessarily need to be treated. However, they should attend regular check-ups in consultation with a doctor.

In chronic diseases of the immune system or other diseases that have to be treated continuously, the spleen often remains permanently enlarged. If the organ is overactive (hypersplenism) or the spleen has ruptured, it may be necessary to remove the spleen (splenectomy). The spleen is not a vital organ, but afterwards the immune system must be well supported and protected with vaccinations.
