Lo sport has the extraordinary ability to change competition into cohesion and its unifying force is also perceived by the economic and social value which it can generate. The numbers generated by the prove it sport supply chain in Italy in 2022: 67,000 sports clubs, 9,500 facilities management companies, 10,000 manufacturing companies, 50 publishing and betting companies, 405,000 employees, 102 billion euros in revenues which make up 3.4% of GDP.
An ecosystem that thrives on interconnections and that Banca Ifis photographed in detail in theObservatory on the Italian Sport System, now in its second edition. The supply chain reconstructed from the report has its nucleus in the sports clubs (amateur and professional) and in the management and maintenance of the facilities. “Upstream” the companies that deal with sports clothing, equipment and vehicles, while “downstream” the publishing companies, the companies that deal with the use of events and those that deal with bets.
I revenues of manufacturing companies, despite the inflationary scenario, they jumped up by 16% compared to the pre-crisis values, settling at 20.1 billion euros. The sports and facility management companies, categories which, as is known, have been severely affected by the pandemic, are starting to run again, the former essentially breaking even with 2019 (6.1 billion against 6.2 billion) and the latter an increase in employed and the number of companies (+3.1%), together reaching a revenue of 44.8 billion euros.
It also grows turnover of upstream companies which reaches 7.1 billion, while as regards the downstream companies, a category that was instead less affected by the closures in the pandemic, revenues amounted to 26.3 billion. In the industry, if media revenues remain mostly unchanged from 2019, the driving force is the betting: compared to pre-pandemic the legal game overall it grows by 19%.
Il investment multiplier it is confirmed to be very high also in 2022: 1 million euro of public investments moves 8 million of private investments and almost 21 million of revenues. In short, after the pandemic the desire for sport explodes and also the tourism expenditure per capita linked to sporting events grew by 9% on 2019 values.
How much are major sporting events worth?
Becoming a stage in the eyes of the world and hosting events such as the Olympics or the World Cup means growing for a country. The numbers speak for themselves: i Rio 2016 Olympic Games yielded revenues of €6.5 billion, while those of Tokyo 2020 they even generated value of 8.3 billion euros. Similar figures are those of the FIFA World Cup that in Qatar it generated 12.3 billion. Furthermore, for the host towns and cities, major sporting events translate into major investments in systems and infrastructures which are a source of value in the medium to long term.
The economic and social value of sport
Global events such as those mentioned are also animated by passion, enthusiasm, often extraordinary feats: components that represent the DNA of every sporting discipline. It is striking in the research presented to see how it Italian sport in 2022 generated 11.4 billion euros in terms of positive externalitiesimpacting health and safety and allowing young people to be involved in healthy and educational activities.
The figure is even more extraordinary when compared with that of 2021, the year in which Covid put a major brake on sporting activity. The end of the restrictions and Italy’s golden year in international competitions (40 medals won by the Azzurri at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics) have made it possible to reach a growth of positive externalities related to the world of sport by 34%. The increase in the fan base (just think that Marcell Jacobs’ Instagram profile grew by +543%) translates into an increase in employment: the sports and facility management companies mark a +4% compared to 2019.
Finally, it must be said that the extent of the social and economic impact of sporting activity is not immediate: many sporting realities, even more so if they have arisen in complex urban contexts, have, for example, demonstrated their ability to alleviate social inequalities, allowing a reduction in crime, decreasing not only the costs of the police and the judiciary, but giving back a future to girls and boys who, even more after the pandemic, struggled to imagine one.
