Sport TV has filed two complaints against RTP with the Regulatory Entity for Social Communication (ERC) for alleged violations of the Television Law. The issue concerns the broadcasting on RTP 1 and RTP 3 of short excerpts of images from sporting events for which exclusive television broadcasting rights are held by the premium sports channel. In one of the cited situations, RTP allegedly broadcast images of a match from the Italian football championship (Fiorentina-AC Milan) without properly identifying the source and even labeling them as “Imagens Eleven.” The other complaint pertains to excerpts from a match in the Portuguese League (FC Porto-Benfica).In both cases, the ERC decided to initiate administrative offense proceedings, considering that the broadcast of the aforementioned images “did not ensure the proper identification of the source.” RTP defends the “lack of basis” for the complaints and states that the alleged infractions involve “meticulous work done by humans,” and that the production of excerpts “is subject to lapses or potential slips.”Given that these are serious infractions, the public station may face fines ranging from 20,000 to 150,000 euros for each of the processes. It should be noted that in April and June, the ERC opened administrative offense proceedings against TVI for the broadcast on TVI and CNN Portugal of excerpts from sporting event images whose broadcasting rights were exclusively held by Sport TV. The issues involved situations related to matches from the Europa League, the Portuguese Football League, and the League Cup in 2023 and 2024.
