Did anyone write down the license plate? Sporting hosted Casa Pia this Monday, in the 19th round of the Portuguese Championship, and was not aware of the opponent. After all, in a match held at the José Alvalade Stadium, the Lions won 8-0, with goals from Coates (twice), Gyökeres (twice), Pote Gonçalves, Trincão (twice) and Catamo.
With the result, Rúben Amorim’s team reached 49 points and returned to the lead, which Benfica had taken. The Encarnados beat Estrela Amadora also this Monday and were drying up their city rival. Casa Pia, however, is in 13th, with 19 points.
The rout began to build with Coates rising above everyone and scoring with a header in the 14th minute. Then it was the turn of top scorer Gyökeres to score the second, free in the area. The center forward also scored the fourth, from a penalty kick. The third, however, was from Pote Gonçalves, taking advantage of a high ball. In a counterattack, at 43, Trincão closed the scoring in the first half.
In the final stage, even with 5-0 in favor, Sporting did not take their foot off the gas. Geny Catamo caught the ball at the edge of the area in the 19th minute and hit it into the corner to make the sixth. At 36, Coates, with the opportunism of a center forward, scored the seventh. Trincão, however, crossed the line in stoppage time with a beautiful shot from outside the area.
Sporting and Casa Pia return to the field in the next few days, for the 20th round of the Liga Portugal. The Lions face Famalicão, on Saturday, away from home. Casa Pia, however, faces Boa Vista, at home, on Monday.
