Young Maori queen crowned in ceremony
New Zealand’s Maori leadership council has named 27-year-old Nga Wai hono i te po Paki as its new queen in a high-profile ceremony. The coronation took place on the country’s northern island, attended by thousands of mourners and a fleet of war canoes that transported the late King Tuheitia to his burial place. HONDURAS
Last drug trafficker extradited to the EU
Mario José Cálix, an associate of former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, has been extradited to the United States on drug trafficking charges. Cálix, 42, was handed over after his capture in June and his extradition was approved in August. This process will probably be the last after the cancellation of the extradition treaty between Honduras and the US. Cálix was linked to Hernández’s criminal network, who was sentenced to 45 years in prison in New York on the same charges. / AFP

Capital suffers blackout after protests
A power outage has hit Port-au-Prince after protesters stormed a power plant in protest of frequent outages. The Peligre power plant, which supplies the capital, has ceased operations, reducing production to zero. The Haitian Electricity Company attributes the blackouts to breakdowns and a lack of technical assistance due to insecurity.
