Former footballer Mounir Hamoud has passed away. It happens on the same day that he was supposed to start a new job at the football club for which he has played the most matches.

“It is with great sadness that Strømsgodset has received the message that Mounir Hamoud has passed away at the age of 39. He died suddenly this morning of a cardiac arrest,” writes the football club on Monday afternoon.

SIF writes that Hamoud has worked as circuit manager for player development in NFF Buskerud for the past four years, and was due to have his very first day of work as a new top player developer in Strømsgodset on Monday.

“The electricity industry is in mourning. Mounir Hamoud will be deeply missed”, writes the club further.

Leaves a wife and five children

Information about the death is shared in consultation with the 39-year-old’s next of kin. Drammens Tidende writes that he leaves behind a wife and five children.

In a statement to DT, Hamoud’s brother, Sofian Hamoud, says that the death came as a shock.

– It is important to us that there is no speculation. He suffered a cardiac arrest and it was not possible to save his life. Now it is a difficult time for his wife, children, family and other acquaintances, he says.

He describes his brother as someone who cared about those around him and wished others well.

– He also cared about the local environment, friends and family and their circles. He was a wonderful person with the best intentions for everyone around him. It was only good and honest intentions, says the brother.

Hamoud played in the Drammen club from 2012–2020. Before that time he was in Lyn and Bodø/Glimt. He also has a number of matches on age-specific national teams for Norway.

“This is a brutal and shocking message to receive – it affects all of us in Strømsgodset, it affects Drammen and the entire football family. Our thoughts go primarily to Mounir’s family and survivors in a very difficult situation. They have lost a father, husband, brother, son and dear family member”, writes SIF in the press release signed by managing director Magne Jordan Nilsen.

Former teammate: – Hurts

Jørgen Horn played with Hamoud in Strømsgodset. Horn had not caught the news of the death when Nettavisen contacted him.

The former centre-back is sent off when he hears about what has happened to his former team-mate.

– I haven’t realized that. It was painful to hear, he tells Nettavisen.

– I have spoken to Mounir quite a lot over the past six months. Considering his job in the circle in Buskerud and at the same time we have talked about a lot of other strange things. It is unbelievably sad to hear, says Horn.

Hamoud should actually have had his first day at work in his new position at Godset today.

– I was really put off where I sit, I’ll be honest. All I can say is that I feel terribly sorry for his family. He was a real guy and I can’t say enough good things about Mounir. I’ve had a lot of fun with him in the dressing room and after the end of his career. He was an incredibly nice person, says Horn, who says he needs to make a few phone calls and update himself on what has happened.

– It’s just tragic, he says in conclusion.
