State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Junaid Ahmed Palak said that social media including Facebook is responsible for spreading false information about the death of quota agitating students. He urged the students not to take any decision without checking something on social media.

A seminar on ‘Cyber-Security Symposium: Bangladesh’s Path Forward’ on addressing current challenges, strategies and future directions to enhance cyber-security was jointly organized by the Department of Information and Communication Technology and the EU delegation team at Amari Hotel in the capital on Wednesday (July 17). At the end, he said this in response to various questions from journalists.

He said, we believe in people’s freedom of speech. We respect everyone’s opinions, comments and feelings. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is very concerned about the safety of ordinary students. The Prime Minister must consider the demands of the students.

He further said, not as a state minister or a representative of the government, but as a father and a conscious person, I would request everyone, that our students should be patient and tolerant and first of all we should ensure the safety of our citizens and students. In this current situation, no third party should be able to mislead and take advantage of the students. At the same time, students should not become intolerant by being misled by any wrong information, rumors or propaganda on social media.

In his speech at the seminar, State Minister Palak said that there is an equal risk of cyber security for all individuals or organizations connected to the Internet in the present world. None of us are 100% safe when it comes to cyber security. Because all over the internet we are provided with footprints and various data. So cyber security is not an issue of any particular person, organization or country, cyber security is a global issue.

He emphasized on joint awareness creation by Government, Private Sector, Academia and Media to ensure a safe cyber world for internet users of the world. At the same time we need to create awareness about digital literacy and AI literacy. Because AI or artificial intelligence has become a part of our daily lives, including in education, health and commerce.

Stating that money is no longer the main issue in this era of fourth industrial revolution based on information technology, the state minister said, now the main issue is data. Therefore, our main responsibility will be to ensure the security of data of our country, government and citizens. Ensuring a secure cyber world for our future and generations to come will require partnerships and collaboration between government, the private sector, academia and international institutions.
