The 65-year-old general practitioner Gabriele Sprickler-Falschlunger (65) was elected party leader of the SPÖ Vorarlberg for the second time after a three-year break on Saturday at the 44th ordinary party congress of the SPÖ Vorarlberg. She received 115 of 162 votes from the delegates (70.99 percent share of the vote). This clearly outstripped club chairman Thomas Hopfner (33 votes) and Angelika Mayr (14 votes), who was also rather unknown in the party.

Sprickler-Falschlunger’s entry was made possible by a corresponding vote at the party congress – she had only announced last Monday that she wanted to run for office. 140 of the 162 delegates approved the application by the 65-year-olds; a two-thirds majority was required. Sprickler-Falschlunger led the party between 2016 and 2018, its primary task then, as now, was to resolve internal party conflicts and fill in trenches.

Two applicants – Robert Bedjanic and Alp Sanlialp – withdrew their candidatures after Sprickler-Falschlunger was sure to appear. Subsequently, they made an election recommendation for them. The party organizations of Dornbirn and Götzis also expressed their confidence in Sprickler-Falschlunger before the election.
