During several days of unrest in Kazakhstan, 164 people died, Sputnik Kazakhstan reported on Sunday in its Telegram channel. The largest number of victims was noted in Almaty.

According to Sputnik Kazakhstan, 103 people, including two children, died in Almaty. In the Kyzylorda region, 21 people died, in the Zhambyl region, 10 people died, in the Almaty region the number of victims reached eight.

Street demonstrations began in western Kazakhstan on January 2 due to a sharp increase in prices for liquefied gas, after which they spread to large cities. The demonstrations soon escalated into armed clashes with the police and looting. The protesters, who are called terrorists by the authorities, made several attempts to storm administrative buildings and police departments, and briefly seized the Almaty international airport.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the republic, about 6,000 people were detained as a result of the riots. Until January 19, a state of emergency is in effect on the entire territory of Kazakhstan, the security forces are cleaning the cities from the instigators of the actions.

The President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev, instructed the government of the country to create a special investigation group to identify the reasons for the mass protests, to establish and prosecute all those responsible.
