An Indian director has filed a lawsuit against Netflix’s hit Korean drama “Squid Game,” claiming it constitutes plagiarism.

According to Bloomberg News on the 13th (local time), Indian film director Soham Shah sued Netflix in a New York federal court, claiming, “They blatantly copied my film ‘Luck.’”

He said his film “Luck” is “about a group of desperate, indebted people who are lured into a competitive game to win a lot of money,” adding that “the main plot, characters, themes, tone, setting and sequence of events in Squid Game are remarkably similar to Luck.”

Shah then said, “Netflix continues to infringe my copyrights through content derived from Squid games, including reality TV game shows and immersive experiences,” adding, “Netflix’s market value increased by more than $900 million (about 1.2 trillion won) because of Squid games.”

Netflix responded to Shah’s claims in a statement, calling them “absurd.”

He continued, “‘Squid Game’ was produced and written by director Hwang Dong-hyeok,” and said, “We plan to strongly defend ourselves against this issue.”

Squid Game has gained worldwide popularity since its release in 2021. Thanks to this, it won the Best Director (Hwang Dok-hyuk) and Best Actor (Lee Jung-jae) awards at the 2022 Emmy Awards, becoming the first non-English drama to win the Emmy Awards.

Netflix is set to release Squid Game Season 2 on December 26th of this year. Season 3 is also planned to be released in 2025.
