Statement Regarding Dismissal of Consul in Shanghai
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) announced the dismissal of Leopoldo Guadalupe Michel Diaz, Consul assigned to the Consulate General of Mexico in Shanghai. This action was taken following reports of the Consul engaging in a series of insults and threats towards the Consulate staff.
The document states that the Foreign Minister, Alicia Bárcena Ibarra, instructed the immediate relief of Mr. Leopoldo Guadalupe Michel Díaz from his duties.
The Consulate reported that since August 8th, protective measures were implemented to prohibit the Consul’s access to the Consulate facilities in order to ensure the safety of workers and attendees.
The statement also notes that Mr. Michel Díaz had previously received a transfer notification to Mexico on July 11th for violating precautionary measures established to protect Consulate staff. Upon his arrival in Mexico, he will face a disciplinary process in accordance with SRE regulations.
The Ministry expressed regret over the events at the Consulate and emphasized that they do not reflect the standards of the Mexican Foreign Service (SEM).
