Sri Lanka Crisis | Missing Sri Lankan President Returns; Ordered to resume gas supply

by time news
Colombo: Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapakse, who has been missing since protesters took over his office and official residence, has reappeared. His office said officials have been ordered to ensure smooth supply of 3,700 metric tonnes of LPG cylinders to address fuel shortage in the country. People took to the streets to protest against the government as the shortage of cooking gas worsened.

The first ship with cooking gas for Sri Lanka arrived at Keravalapitiya this afternoon. With this, President Rajapaksa instructed the officials to unload and distribute the gas. Sri Lankan media reports that the second vessel with 3,740 metric tons of gas will arrive on July 11 and the third with 3,200 metric tons of gas on July 15. The iconic administrative buildings, which serve as the official residences of the president and prime minister, have been thronged by protesters. At the same time, the police said that no major security breach was reported on Sunday.

President Rajapakse was not at the Presidential House when the mob stormed the building on Saturday. Sri Lanka, a country of 22 million people, is in the grip of an unprecedented economic crisis, with the worst foreign exchange shortage in seven decades and the Lankan government struggling to pay for essential fuel and other essentials. Sri Lanka’s total external debt is $51 billion. In April, the Lankan government announced that it was suspending payments of $7 billion in foreign debt due this year.
