Anti-government protests have intensified in Sri Lanka, which is reeling under a severe financial crisis.

At the same time, the Rajapaksa government lost its majority in Sri Lanka as the constituent parties left the front en masse. Smaller parties, including the 14-member Sri Lanka Freedom Party, have decided to leave Mahinda Rajapaksa’s People’s Front and remain independent in parliament.

The Rajapaksa government had the support of 145 members in the 225-member Sri Lankan parliament. The government became a minority as more than 40 MPs withdrew their support. Meanwhile, new Finance Minister Ali Sabri, who was sworn in yesterday, resigned less than 24 hours later.

Heavy protests continued in various parts of Sri Lanka today as well. Security has been beefed up in major cities as protests continue into the night. Opposition parties have stated they will not run in the by-elections
