A strike has been announced in Sri Lanka today and tomorrow. A curfew was imposed by the police yesterday due to the intensifying protest. However, the curfew has been withdrawn due to the radical activities of the protesters.

It has been reported that both President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe have left their official residences in Colombo. It is said that the houses of top government officials are also closed and they may have fled abroad.

Afraid of the actions of the protesters, the youth of the country are raising the war flag to ask President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to step down and Anil Wickremesinghe, who is newly in charge of the Prime Minister, to step down. Petrol stocks are closed. Major roads into Colombo are closed.

Since the beginning of this year, Sri Lanka has been facing economic crisis. Rising prices and fuel shortages have pushed people to the margins. Food prices have skyrocketed. People lost their jobs.

People staged a fierce protest against Rajapakse who was the first Prime Minister and burnt his house. Rajapaksa survived because he escaped earlier. He resigned as Prime Minister as he could no longer continue in power.

He was succeeded by Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Prime Minister. There is now a protest against him. Protesters have called for a protest in Colombo today. Because the court has given permission for this protest. The police could not do anything. They are in the position of having to provide security. The police have expressed hope that today’s protest will be peaceful and there will be no incidents.

The UN Human Rights Commission has warned that the police should be involved in security to prevent violence. During the violence that took place last May, 9 people died due to police action.

The Sri Lankan government is in debt to the tune of $51 billion and is now insolvent and knocking on the doors of the International Monetary Fund.
