All other ministries except Mahinda Rajapaksa, the country’s prime minister, resigned last April due to the severe economic crisis and popular uprising in Sri Lanka. Following this, Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned as Prime Minister on May 9 last year as the people’s struggle intensified.

Following this, Ranil Wickremesinghe became the new Prime Minister on May 12. Thereafter, Adhikari Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has been appointing ministers for various departments.

Four ministers were sworn in on May 14 and nine on May 20. As a result, 8 ministries took office last Monday. The post of finance minister, however, was not offered to anyone.

In this context, the Prime Minister of the country Ranil Wickremesinghe today took over as Minister of Finance with additional responsibilities. He was sworn in in the presence of President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
