Srijit Mukherjee, the director of Indian Bengali cinema, is wearing a snake. A few days ago Srijit legally brought a python to his residence in Lake Gardens, Kolkata. The ball python snake has been named ‘Ulupi’. And the snake’s house has been made by the director in his red room by mixing soil and sand.

How did you come up with the idea of petting a snake? In response to this question Srijit said, ‘I have always loved snakes. I used to spend a lot of time with them when I came to Sapur as a child. I’ve spent hours with ball pythons or corn snakes in foreign pet shops. It seemed that just as snakes can be petted abroad, it is better to do the same in this city. Snake elegant, misunderstood.’
“Feed the snake with milk-banana” — the phrase is used in this subcontinent. But I think it is a superstition that snakes are traitors. Rather, some snakes are good pets. Ball python is such a snake,” said Srijit.
Snake venom is also valuable to snakes. Referring to that, Srijit said, ‘All animals have an extreme manifestation. Like a dog can bite someone and tear off the flesh. But just as Labradors should not be mistaken for Dobermans, it is wrong to compare Ball Pythons with venomous snakes such as gokhras or coyotes. Even talking to snake experts reveals that venom is valuable to snakes too. Venomous snakes also usually use snake venom for self-defense.’
Srijit thinks that the method of judging the thoughts of animals with human thoughts is wrong. According to him, it is wrong to judge the thoughts of other animals by the way a human thinks. None of us know what Ulopi is thinking. He did not say that he was having difficulty living in this environment. This ball python was not plucked from a jungle. Ball pythons have been used as pets for generations. There is a difference between wild cat and captive breed. Ball pythons are captive breeds. But yes, it is illegal to import such pets from abroad, only from breeders and resellers in the country registered on the central government’s environment website, like Ulupi from Kerala.’
