When Sriram Venkitaraman became the 54th Collector of Alappuzha, protests arose from various quarters. Police arrested and removed the Youth Congress workers who black-flagged the collector accused in the criminal case.

Sriram took charge of Alappuzha from his wife Renu Raj. Meanwhile, Sriram said that he would not respond to the controversies.
Journalist KM Basheer died in Thiruvananthapuram on the morning of August 3, 2019, when he was hit by a speeding car. The car in which Sriram Venkitaraman and his friend Wafa were traveling went out of control and rammed Basheer’s vehicle.
