Former SS 10a Sonderkommando Helmut Oberlander died at the age of 97 at his home in Waterloo, Canada, surrounded by family. This was announced by Oberlander’s lawyer Ronald Poulton.

Canada has challenged the SS man’s right to be in the country since 1995. In September 2020, the immigration authorities considered the issue of his deportation, but did not manage to make a final decision.

“He remained faithful to his faith despite the challenges that life presented to them. He was comforted by his family and the support of many around him, ”the CBC channel quoted the Oberlander family’s statement from a lawyer.

Helmut Oberländer is a former Canadian and Soviet citizen of German descent, suspected of committing war crimes during World War II. In 1941-1943 he served in the Security Service of the Reichsfuehrer SS. According to the RF IC, Oberlander was involved, in particular, in the execution of 27 thousand people in the Rostov region in 1942. In Soviet times, the KGB of the USSR found out that in 1941–1943, members of this group massacred civilians and killed them in mobile gas chambers. He fought on the Eastern Front until the end of 1944, until he was wounded.

After several trials in 2012-2017, the involvement of Shelmut Oberlander in the war crimes was determined to be “significant”. In July 2017, he was finally stripped of his Canadian citizenship.
