During the last weeks, failures have been reported in the elevators of at least 4 public hospitals of the IMSS, ISSSTE and the SSa.

The new incident was recorded at the General Hospital of Pachuca and due to a failure in the elevator at the site, a nurse was injured.

Public health is in a severe crisis due to the lack of investment that has prevailed for decades. The most notorious aspect can be observed in the deficient facilities and it affects not only the patients but also the workers. The most recent case occurred with a failure inside an elevator left by a nurse with cervical injuries.

In this sense, the construction of a hospital or clinic does not end with the delivery of the final work. In reality, it is a much more extensive process that also involves equipping the unit to have everything necessary to care for patients. While another central part is the remodeling of the facilities.

Although all equipment has an estimated period of useful life, it must be checked periodically to prevent accidents. It is a concept that applies everywhere and you should never skimp on resources.

Elevator fails and leaves a nurse injured

However, a problem that is becoming more and more frequent is that related to the elevators in public health units. They are a central part and one that cannot be done without because they are necessary for patients with mobility problems. In addition, they are also useful to allow free movement between workers.

The most recent case was registered on July 30 in the General Hospital of Pachuca, which belongs to the Ministry of Health (SSa). According to what was reported, the person affected was Arleth “N”, who works in the hospital.

Based on the testimonies, the nurse used the elevator to go up a few floors as part of her work routine. The drawback was that the equipment had some failures that caused it to fall to the first floor.

As a result of this failure in the elevator, the nurse suffered cervical injuries. She was not serious and she was cared for by her own colleagues. Although the most worrying thing is that this type of damage is becoming more common.

Other recent cases that occurred in hospitals

As a recap, during the last few weeks at least four public hospitals have had failures of various kinds. The most serious case was that of Regional Hospital No. 18 of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) in Playa del Carmen. The failure caused the death of the 6-year-old girl Aitana.

Another event that was reported occurred in the Regional General Hospital No. 46 of Guadalajara, which also belongs to the IMSS.

While a third case was registered in the General Hospital “Dr. Fernando Ocaranza” of the Institute of Security and Social Services for State Workers (ISSSTE), located in Hermosillo, Sonora.

In the end, all the cases are a sample of the state in which the public health system is located. In the same way that more hospitals are required, it is also necessary to remodel existing ones.
